Forum: movies Subject: PD status of movies

Hello all

I've heard that most Japanese movies released on or before 1953 are in the Public domain.

Could someone let me know if the following movies are in PD and permissible free downloads?

- Ikiru
- Ugetsu Monogotari
- Tokyo Story
- Story of the Last Chrysanthemums

Also, let me know abt the PD status of the following films -

- The Crowd
- Metropolis

A few more queries -

I'm from India. Are all US-copyrighted movies by default copyrighted in India as well?
i.e Can an Indian user legally view or download an American copyrighted movie made way back in 1940? Do we need to study the Indian copyright law to figure this out?

As for the films themselves, excluding Metropolis, I can't tell you because I haven't moved into the japanese movies as of yet for my TV Show. Metropolis was pulled out of the PD and now it seems its back in.

I was always under the impression that you'd have to register the copyright in each indivual country. However, if a movie is copyrighted in a forigen country, that copyright will be observed.

I'm still learning about copyright myself. So I hope this kinda helps.
